The concept of the end of the world has captivated both scientists and storytellers for a considerable time. Although certain theories have led to the creation of blockbuster films, a recent study presents a novel scientific forecast regarding the ultimate destiny of the universe — the “Big Crunch.”
This hypothesis suggests that after expanding for billions of years, the universe may eventually reverse its trajectory and implode. Scientists characterize this situation as “cosmic hell,” where everything, including galaxies, stars, and planets, is drawn back together.
Researchers from Cornell University, in collaboration with colleagues from various institutions, have attempted to estimate when this significant collapse could take place. Their findings indicate that the process may commence in approximately 11 billion years and require an additional 8.5 billion years to finalize — amounting to a total of 19.5 billion years from now.
Dr. Ethan Yu–Cheng from Shanghai Jiao Tong University likened it to a basketball being thrown upwards. Just as gravity pulls the ball back down, the negative cosmological constant may ultimately stop and reverse the expansion of the universe.
Dr. Hoang Nhan Luu from the Donostia International Physics Center remarked that these transformations occur over such extensive time frames that civilizations like ours would remain oblivious to them. “These changes transpire gradually, so no immediate effects would be apparent until the concluding moments,” he stated.
So, is it possible for humans to endure this cosmic collapse? Lead researcher Henry Tye asserts that survival would necessitate relocating far beyond our solar system. “We have a few billion years to prepare for that journey,” he noted.
While this prediction will not impact our lifetime, it provides valuable insights into the colossal forces that shape the universe. For the time being, the Big Crunch remains a remote possibility — one that highlights the enigmas of space and time.
