Democrats are calling on former President Obama to refrain from engaging in the conflict as Trump officials unveil documents alleging that his administration attempted to “manipulate” the 2016 election.
They are advising him to avoid public confrontations with President Trump, particularly as Republicans remain split regarding the Epstein files while Democrats continue to take an offensive stance, as reported by WJBF.
Party insiders assert that appearances, such as Tulsi Gabbard’s at the White House briefing on Wednesday, are intended to mislead the public.
“Regardless of how much Trump and Fox are attempting to revive this issue, the base is still fracturing over the Epstein documents, so there is no need to interfere with their self-inflicted wounds,” remarked Democratic strategist Eddie Vale.
In interviews conducted on Wednesday, Democratic operatives—including some who were part of Obama’s team—expressed that the former president should keep his distance and refrain from amplifying Trump’s criticisms.
They commended Obama’s reticence even as Trump accused him of treason.
“I believe his strategy was appropriate. Clearly outline the inconsistencies and redirect attention to what Trump is attempting to distract from,” stated one Democratic strategist. “Attempting to counter Donald Trump’s messaging is akin to trying to follow a drunk driver home. The only option is to simply endure.”
In essence, Obama’s current objective is to let the Trump presidency run its course while evading accountability — at least from the perspective of Trump and his supporters.
On Friday, Gabbard released a significant amount of documents that she asserts demonstrate the Obama administration fabricated the narrative of Russian interference in 2016.
Trump swiftly capitalized on this release.
“Look, he’s guilty. It’s not a question. You know, I like to say, ‘Let’s give it time.’ It’s there. He’s guilty,” Trump stated to reporters in the Oval Office. “This was treason, this was every word you can think of.”
Since his departure from office, Obama has predominantly avoided direct responses to Trump, reportedly believing that engaging would be beneath the dignity of the presidency.
However, this week, he made an exception.
“In deference to the presidency, our office typically refrains from responding to the incessant nonsense and misinformation emanating from this White House,” Obama remarked in an unusual statement. “However, these assertions are sufficiently outrageous to warrant a response. These peculiar allegations are absurd and represent a feeble attempt at diversion. The document released last week does not undermine the widely accepted conclusion that Russia sought to influence the 2016 presidential election but did not successfully alter any votes. These conclusions were corroborated in a 2020 report by the bipartisan Senate Intelligence Committee, chaired at the time by Marco Rubio.”
Democrats focused on the tone of Obama’s statement — calm, measured, and subtly critical of Rubio, who is now serving as Trump’s Secretary of State.
“While they usually overlook the daily occurrences, I believe it was wise to issue that statement to highlight its absurdity, particularly with the clever reminder of Rubio’s agreement with them,” Vale commented.
Nevertheless, they maintain that the primary objective is to remain focused and avoid being drawn into Trump’s narrative.
“They are not allowing Trump to pretend this is about anything other than diverting attention from his broken promise regarding the Epstein files and attempting to bolster his declining approval ratings,” stated David Litt, a former speechwriter for Obama.
Democrats contend that the Epstein matter is Trump’s Achilles’ heel — a subject that even his supporters cannot overlook.
“Epstein serves as the kryptonite to Trump’s superpower of distraction,” Vale remarked.
“He has been recycling the usual accusations of, ‘Blame the media,’ ‘Blame Obama.’ And while Fox News is faithfully reporting these claims, his voters … and many House Republicans are seeing through it and continue to demand that Trump release the files.”
