Oregon Senator Ron Wyden, currently in his fifth decade of service in Congress, has stated that he has no intention of stepping down, despite increasing demands for older Democrats to yield to a new generation of leaders.
Furthermore, Wyden, who will turn 79 in 2028, informed The Associated Press of his plans to pursue another term, expressing confidence in his ability to confront President Donald Trump, as reported by The Washington Times.
“I believe accountability is essential,” Wyden remarked. “However, I think the Founding Fathers envisioned a government that is results-oriented and grounded in common sense, which is precisely what I aim to achieve. I possess the necessary energy to do so.”
These comments arise as Democrats grapple with ongoing dissatisfaction regarding Joe Biden’s choice to run for reelection at the age of 81, prior to his withdrawal in July 2024. Trump subsequently triumphed over then-Vice President Kamala Harris.
“I have consistently advocated for all elected officials over the age of 70 to consider this their final term — to step down gracefully and create opportunities for the next generation of leaders,” stated Amanda Litman, co-founder and president of Run for Something.
Wyden began his tenure in the House in 1981 and transitioned to the Senate in 1996. Throughout his career, he has conducted 1,125 town halls, including 23 this year alone. His recent engagement in conservative Sherman County attracted approximately 20 attendees to a former school situated amidst wheat fields and wind turbines.

“Every Oregonian is significant, regardless of their residence,” Wyden stated.
He informed the AP that traditional town halls are increasingly vital for reducing political division and distrust.
“This is in stark contrast to congressional Republicans,” Wyden remarked, pointing out that GOP legislators have recently preferred smaller, more controlled gatherings.
Approximately 75% of voters in Sherman County supported Trump last November, and Wyden has not won the county since 2004. Nevertheless, the meeting was conducted in a civil manner, with participants patiently waiting for their opportunity to pose questions.
Charlie Hogue, 71, challenged Wyden on the actions Democrats are taking to counter Trump.

“I believed we had checks and balances in this nation, and I am starting to lose faith as the current administration disregards court orders,” Hogue remarked. “Are the Democrats merely planning to campaign for the upcoming elections… or do you have a strategy?”
Wyden referenced a recent visit to Canada to engage in trade discussions with the prime minister and conversations with Oregon wheat farmers regarding tariffs.
Another participant, T.L. Fassbender, 76, inquired why Democrats appear to support individuals residing in the country unlawfully. Wyden responded that the system is “broken” and expressed his opposition to safeguarding those who engage in criminal activities.
“My parents were escaping Nazi Germany when they arrived in the United States,” Wyden stated. “I am convinced that legal immigration enhances and strengthens our nation.”
Wyden has also emerged as a significant Democratic advocate demanding more transparency regarding the Jeffrey Epstein sex trafficking case — a matter that has turned into a political challenge for Trump as his supporters voice grievances about unmet commitments to disclose records.
“We dedicated three years to tracing the finances,” Wyden stated. “And we will persist until the truth is revealed.”
He encouraged Democrats to organize more events in conservative regions.
“The old adage is, ‘most of life is just showing up,’” Wyden noted. “However, it is particularly crucial in government because there is a perception that this is rigged.”
