On Thursday morning, Corewell Health Beaumont Troy Hospital, located just north of Detroit, was the scene of an active shooter incident that commenced around 7:08 a.m. Panic ensued as reports emerged that an individual had opened fire in the hospital’s parking garage.
The shooter, who was later identified as a hospital employee, shot a 25-year-old coworker twice in the arm. The victim was promptly transported to the emergency department, where he was reported to be in stable condition.
The incident prompted an immediate lockdown of the hospital. Police, SWAT teams, ATF agents, drones, and canine units responded to the scene. Nearby schools and neighborhoods were instructed to shelter in place.
Authorities quickly clarified that the shooting was not random but rather a targeted act stemming from a personal dispute between the suspect and the victim. The shooter fled the scene in a vehicle, prompting a regional search effort.
By 9:30 a.m., police located the suspect at a residence in Macomb Township. He was arrested without incident. Surveillance and data tracking enabled authorities to close in swiftly.
Operations at the hospital were disrupted but resumed later that morning once the site was deemed secure. Staff and patients received emotional and logistical support.
Corewell Health pledged to reschedule affected procedures and reiterated its commitment to workplace safety. The incident highlighted the critical need for robust security measures and the potential risks of internal violence.
